It wasn’t long after it’s founding that America had it’s first encounter with state sponsored Islamic terrorism from the Barbary coast states of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli. Muslim pirates and slavers, operating under the control of the “Day of Algiers”, were preying upon American merchant ships. With no American navy to protect them, Congress voted to pay a tribute in exchange for a guarantee of safe passage for our ships. A special commission consisting of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were dispatched to London in 1786 to meet with Algerian ambassador Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja. During negotiations the ambassador was asked why Muslims held so much hostility towards America, a nation with which they had no previous contacts. The answer was recorded in the congressional records as follows,
“Islam was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Quran, that all nations who didn’t acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.”
As America soon learned, a policy of accommodation only encouraged the pirates to seize more ships and to take more captives. Far from providing safe passage to American vessels, the North African rulers remained active accomplices to the crime of piracy, taking protection money while at the same time permitting the banditry to continue.
The situation changed with the election of Thomas Jefferson as president, who was an outspoken critic of the practice of tribute. He saw it not only as an affront to the nation’s dignity but also realized that in conveying weakness, it also encouraged further treachery. Declaring that America would spend “millions for defense but not one cent for tribute”, Jefferson pressed the issue by deploying a force consisting of American Marines, the USS Constitution, USS Constellation, USS Philadelphia, USS Chesapeake, USS Argus, USS Syren and USS Intrepid to combat the forces of Islam. Finally, in 1805, the USS Constitution supported the landing of Marines “on the shores of Tripoli” in an action that was subsequently immortalized in the Marine Corps Hymn. The harbor citadel at Derna that served as the headquarters for the pirates was reduced to rubble, freeing the Mediterranean from domination by militant Islam and forcing the states of the Barbary coast into new treaties with America.
During his recent speech in Cairo to the Muslim world, President Obama said,
“Islam has always been a part of America’s story. The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco. In signing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796, our second President John Adams wrote, “The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims.” … And when the first Muslim-American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers – Thomas Jefferson – kept in his personal library.”
From his statement, who would have thought that America had been attacked, without provocation, by state sponsored Islamic terrorists or that the owner of the Koran he refers to was the very president who sent the US navy and marines to stop their attacks on our shipping?
As he stood there at the podium he said,
“As the Holy Koran tells us, “Be conscious of God and speak always the truth.” That is what I will try to do – to speak the truth as best I can.” He than continued on with the most fundamentally fraudulent speech ever delivered by an American President. While specific examples can be made of all the half truths contained in his “historic” speech to the Muslim world, I think the more important issue now at hand for both Americans and their allies is trying to understand just where his loyalties lie. Reviewing the weeks both prior to and as a result of this speech point to a troubling trend.
- President Obama has ordered the closure of GITMO and in the meantime provides detainees there with access to laptop computers and Al Jazeera.
- The Justice department, having already won it’s case against three members of the New Black Panther Party for their involvement in voter intimidation, suddenly dissmisses all charges.
- It’s reported that the FBI and other law enforcement organizations had been ordered to “back off” of counter-terrorism investigations into the activities of Black Muslim converts. This at a time when four black Muslim converts are arrested for plotting to attack two Bronx synagogues and shoot down a military plane and another black Muslim convert kills a US soldier and wounds another at a Army recruiting station in Arkansas.
- We learn that Al Qaeda is trying to smuggle a biological weapon into the United States via tunnels under the Mexico border. If that fails, they can just turn to the 268-page dossier disclosing the addresses and specifications of hundreds of U.S. nuclear-weapons-related facilities, laboratories, reactors and research activities which was “accidentally” published on the Internet.
- President Obama declares that the United States is no longer a Christian nation because we are, surprise, actually a muslim one!
- Obama and his administration promises Jerusalem to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
- Obama hosts a little publisized meeting with members of the Muslim Brotherhood in Washington.
The immediate results following his Cairo speech:
- U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder issues statement specifically protecting American Muslims. Apparently Christians and Jews are out of luck.
- Although Obama has decided Iran has a right to develop “peaceful” nuclear power as does North Korea, Iran demands appology from the United States for it’s involvement in the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh in 1953. and other crimes against Iran.
- The UN announces it will hold public hearings on alleged “war crimes” by Israel against those in the Gaza Strip.
- Obama promises in his speech to American Muslims to ease the impact of post-9/11 scrutiny of their charities. Like this one?
- Obama makes it clear the United States has abandoned one of it’s closest allies, Israel.
President Obama obviously views the Israel-Palestinian conflict from the Arab point of view, which was supported in his speech by referring to the Palestinians as a people displaced during the creation of Israel, which is of course false.
President Obama feels that our reaction to the attacks of 9-11 were contrary to American principles and ideals. I think our reaction was both measured and showed great restraint. The problem as I see it is we elected a man to the highest office in the land who does not share the principles and ideas that have led America to become such a great success. Even as he destroys our economy in his quest for social justice, he extends that philosophy into his handling of our foreign policy. Will he finally come to learn what Jefferson already knew 200 years ago, that his policy is an affront to American dignity and will only encourage more treachery? Or are the goals of Islam more important to him than the goals of America?
