It sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? No more bank-breaking insurance premiums, no more thousand-dollar ER bills, no more having to decide between groceries and your prescription medication? Universal healthcare – free to all. Everyone receives healthcare. What a wonderful idea! Or is it?

We wouldn’t have to watch children suffer, people would no longer be burdened by such heavy insurance payments, the poor would become more healthy. How could anyone oppose such a good solution to such a horrible problem? I can say that I was even moved to feel a desire for government run healthcare after watching the film “Sicko”. However, I have come to realize that every coin has two sides, when I flipped this coin over, I found some interesting facts that have changed my mind.

Universal Healthcare does not = universal health care

Britain’s Department of Health reported in 2006 that at any given time, nearly 900,000 Britons are waiting for admission to National Health Service hospitals, and shortages force the cancellation of more than 50,000 operations each year.

We could eliminate 3/4 of our current healthcare costs right now

According to Health Affairs 75% of all healthcare costs are spent in relation to preventable diseases and illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer (half of all cancer is preventable according to the American Cancer Society 2006 report)

Under Universal HC, the government will have to further restrict personal liberties

They will have the responsibility to regulate on whom a doctor can perform a particular surgery as well as a responsibility to tell you how much and what kinds of things you can do, eat, drink, smoke, etc. if you wish to receive care from the system.

Most people agree the Welfare system is messed up

Universal Healthcare is welfare. It is another arm of taxpayer money being distributed as the government sees fit. If we are unhappy with how they are running current programs under their control, why would we want to give another are over to their control? Let them be faithful with what they have before we give them more.

There are many other things I found in my study on this subject matter, and most pertain to how much better the healthcare system could be if the individual was able to keep more of their money through lower taxes, investments, and fewer restrictions on doctors and hospitals. Kind of like the “old school” doctors but with newer technology.

I encourage you to study both sides of this coin for yourself. It’s your body, it’s your health, and it’s a scary thing when that much is riding in the hands of people who don’t even know your name.
