I bet this is one of those days Pelosi wished she had just stayed in bed. Today we were all treated to her third version of what she knew and when she knew it. This time around she admitted that her top security adviser was part of a February 2003 briefing in which he learned that interrogators were in fact water-boarding suspected terrorists. She made her position as clear as she could with the following statement,
“My statement is clear, and let me read it again. Let me read it again. I’m sorry. I have to find the page, “When — when — when my staff person — I’m sorry, the page is out of order — five months later, my staff person told me that there had been a briefing — informing that there had been a briefing and that a letter had been sent. I was not briefed on what was in that briefing; I was just informed that the briefing had taken place.”"
She thinks this statement is clear? She sounds like a criminal being questioned under bright lights! She couldn’t even make a statement without finding the page with her most current version on it. While she does admit to attending one briefing on the interrogation methods back in the fall of 2002, she maintains her position that she was never told they were actually being used. “I wasn’t briefed, I was informed that somebody else had been briefed about it,” she said.
Today she tried to shift the focus from her by accusing the Republicans. “They misrepresented every step of the way, and they don’t want that focus on them, so they try to turn the attention on us,” she cried. Or maybe this is all the fault of the CIA? Forced to release the torture memos by President Obama, they must have devised a diabolical plot against her. Perhaps the agency spooks are actually TEA party supporters in their off time?
”They mislead us all the time,” she said. And when a reporter asked whether the agency had lied, Pelosi said yes. Asked about this, CIA Spokesman George Little said, “It is not the policy of the CIA to mislead the United States Congress.”
Pelosi was also taken to task on why she herself did not protest the use of these interrogation methods, since she has been a prominent voice in denouncing them as illegal. Her defense is that her focus at the time was on wresting congressional control from Republicans so her party could change the course of our country.
I think the important thing here is that the only thing she has actually been honest about is her motivations in not opposing the use of “torture”. That’s because she really doesnt care. Neither do any of the other members of the Obama administration. It is nothing more than a political weapon to be used against the opposing party. She claims there was nothing she could have done even if she had wanted to. But that position was also shot out of the water in this FoxNews report,
“Not so, said Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee. ”As a member of the Gang of Four, if the CIA proposes to do something that we think is wrong, we can do something about it. We’ve done something about,” he said.
The so-called “Gang of Four” refers to the four members of Congress who serve in the chairman and vice chairman spots on the Senate and House Intelligence Committees. In 2002, that group included Sens. Bob Graham, D-Fla., and Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Reps. Porter Goss, R-Fla, and Pelosi, D-Calif.”
